About Web Design Guelph

Hi I’m Tim, I started Web Design Guelph to help people learn to build websites using WordPress.  I can also show you how to create a very basic website using Google Sites and I will soon be soon be offering instruction on how to build a website with Shopify.   We can discuss what option would work best for you.

I meet with clients in a local coffee shop and provide one-on-one instruction.  Group lessons will be held at various locations.  My services are intended for beginners, who are interested in learning to build a website by themselves.  I can provide instruction in many areas, such as creating graphics, search engine optimization (SEO), performing market research, using google analytics and advertising with google.  Please see my services page for more information.

Use of WordPress

There are many options available for building a website, however, WordPress is by far the most popular, and for good reason.  It is relatively easy to learn, great for search engine optimization and has a huge number of plugins that can be used to enhance your website’s functionality.

Fees are variable depending on preferences, but for an example that would be suitable for most is

  • $77 for a premium theme (a one-time fee)
  • $100/year for web hosting.

The only other expense is my fee, which will vary depending on how much you wish to use my services.  A good starting place is $300 for two sessions of three hours each, or $100 for a weekend seminar, but you can use my services as little or as much as you wish.  With this strategy, you will be able to build your own website at a fraction of the cost required to pay a web design company to do it and you will be able to maintain your website with no ongoing fees, other than web hosting.

Easy to learn

Using WordPress with a premium theme and a page builder allows you to generate a customized website.  These tools are relatively easy to use and do not require you to learn any code.

Responsive web design

The use of mobile devices to search the internet is increasing rapidly and more searches are now performed on mobile devices than on desktop computers!  It is important that your website be responsive, meaning your content is displayed differently depending on the device accessing it (mobile phone, desktop, laptop, tablet, etc.).  If you follow my plan, a responsive design is created automatically for you by your theme and there is little that you have to do in order for your website to look great on all devices.

eCommerce Capability

You can easily add eCommerce functionality by installing a plugin such as WooCommerce.

Many WordPress plugins are available, which can perform almost any function you need.

Stability and Security

Using WordPress and a premium theme, along with good practices such not installing too many plugins, using a strong password and limiting login attempts, will allow for a very stable and secure site.

About Me

I have two undergraduate degrees, one in business and one in science and a PhD in Biomedical Science from the University of Guelph.  I recently returned to Canada after working for four years at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in Durham, North Carolina.  If interested, please see my linked in profile.

I have an entrepreneurial spirit and in order to pursue my business ventures, I learned about WordPress, graphic design, eCommerce, search engine optimization (SEO) and Google Analytics, among other things.  There is a lot more to creating a website than I first envisioned and learning everything by myself took a lot of time and effort.  There is plenty of good information on the internet, but as is the case with the internet, much of it is biased, outdated, poorly written, fluffery, or downright wrong.  Having found few services in the Guelph area that provide private on-on-one instruction and tutoring in these areas, I decided to offer my own teaching service.

My Other Interests

The following is a list of some of my other interests.  Please feel free to contact me if you are interested.

Cancer immunotherapy is an approach to treating cancer that utilizes the body’s own immune system to destroy cancer cells.  Cancer immunotherapy has been heralded by the prestigious journal Science as the Breakthrough of the Year in 2013.  Recent clinical trials have returned extraordinary results and complete remissions have been achieved in some patients with incurable cancers.  Myself and a colleague are two PhD scientists with extensive experience in this field and we have all the expertise required to design, construct and test immunotherapies up to human clinical trials.  At present we plan to focus on developing a new approach for engineering T cells for adoptive T cell transfer (ACT), a form of immunotherapy which has shown tremendous clinical potential for a variety of cancers and we are hoping to expand and improve on this!  We aspire to start a new company and have the freedom to be strategic in every aspect of the therapeutic development process, and we will optimize for commercial success from the start.

At present, about 30 companies are planning, or conducting clinical trials using ACT-based approaches.  Importantly, identifying both the correct tumor target or targets and T cell engineering approach have emerged as critical factors in treatment success, in terms of both generating potent anti-tumor immune responses and also in preventing or minimizing immune-related adverse events stemming from the therapy.  We believe we provide tremendous novelty, as our approach to ACT involves targeting tumors using a strategy that, to our knowledge, is not currently being explored by other investigators or companies.  Although there are many groups working on cancer immunotherapies, the early stage of this field and its extraordinary breadth and potential provides a fertile patent landscape.  As such, interest among investors in immunotherapy is growing.  For example, at its IPO in 2013, Juno Therapeutics, which was founded to develop T cell based immunotherapies, was among the largest stock market offerings in the history of the biotechnology industry.  The market capitalization of Juno is currently around 5 billion, despite the company not having a single FDA approved product.  This valuation reflects investor understanding of the extraordinary promise of immunotherapy to redefine how cancer is treated.

We are highly trained and highly motivated and we have numerous ideas that we think will work. We have trained all our lives for this, but we need funding.  Despite the huge amounts of money spent on cancer research, it is very difficult, even for qualified for individuals such as ourselves, to raise funds to do this kind of work.  Unfortunately, the system that determines how research dollars are spent is badly broken and I have given up trying to acquire funding through conventional routes.  I will continue to try to raise money to develop cancer immunotherapies by applying for venture capital and possibly through crowd sourcing.  In the meantime, I will try to try by earn the money I need through a variety of business ventures. One of my greatest passions is learning about illness prevention and health optimization using cutting edge technology and environmental health science principles.  Environmental Health Science is a field which takes a holistic view of a person’s health and seeks to find (and rectify) the sources of illness.  This is in contrast to conventional medicine, which typically uses a symptom relief approach to treating illness.  An environmental health approach considers factors such as: genetics, nutrition, stress, exercise and importantly, environmental exposures to microorganisms and toxins which could adversely affect your health.  One of my major interests is the analysis of indoor air quality and particularly how exposure to mould can affect health.  Canadians typically spend 90% of their time indoors and we breathe an average of 10-15 thousand litres of air a day.  If this air is contaminated with toxins, such as mould, a wide variety of illnesses can result.

Currently medical doctors in Canada and the United States receive virtually no training in environmental health and a person presenting with classical symptoms of a toxic environmental exposure (such as mould, or heavy metals, etc.) are rarely diagnosed properly.  Sick individuals may present to their clinician with a host of seemingly unrelated illnesses, sometimes referred to as multimorbidity.  These conditions may include fatigue, sore throat, cough, watery eyes, runny nose, long lasting colds, generally not feeling well, sleep disturbances, psychological disturbances (anxiety, depression), joint pain, skin issues, digestive issues and the list goes on.  Although these problems may result from causes that are relatively easy remedy, such as removal of the toxin from the person’s environment and dietary adjustments, persons living with these ailments are rarely informed of this.  Instead, patients are typically sent to a slew of medical specialists who each address the particular issue, but none address the root cause.  Patients also typically end up on many medications to treat their symptoms, but the underlying issues that caused them in the first place remain.  Despite overwhelming and incontrovertible scientific evidence that there is a large and growing proportion of the population that are sick as a result of exposure to environmental toxins, and that there are ways to treat them, the medical system continues to disregard this information in favor of a symptom relief approach.

People are beginning to recognize the failure of the medical system to serve them and are losing faith in their physicians.  This is can be seen by the extraordinary rise in the use of alternative health care practitioners.  For example, in the United States, there are now more visits to non-conventional health practitioners than to primary care physicians.

One particularly important environmental health issue stems from water damage in homes and buildings.  Estimates of frequency of water damage to buildings vary, but the number may be as high as 50%.  Poor indoor air quality in the home, workplace and schools is common and very concerning.  If you can smell mustiness, even faintly, then there is mold present.  Even if you do not see or smell mould, it could still be there at levels that can make you very sick, especially people who are genetically susceptible to mould.  Sensitive tests are needed in order to accurately determine if a problem exists and most mould testing companies do not use the most advanced approaches, for example, the environmental mold readiness index (ERMI).  I am currently developing a consultation service in which I would visit clients in their homes and provide a comprehensive investigation of environmental factors that could be affecting their health.  At the discretion of the client, the investigation could include:

  • DNA testing to identify potential genetic susceptibilities
  • Air quality testing for: mould, formaldehyde, volatile organic chemicals, radon, asbestos, etc.
  • Lab tests to examine a person’s state of health, for example, markers of inflammation, like C-reactive protein (CRP).
  • Testing and inspection for potential sources of exposure to toxins in home and work environments.  This may include the air quality tests mentioned above as well as: pesticides from food, heavy metals, household chemicals and personal care products, etc.
  • Discussion of diet, nutrition, stress and fitness

If you would be interested in this sort of service, I would love to hear from you!

I have been a runner for over 20 years, but only recently discovered the importance of running form. I qualified for the Boston Marathon in my first attempt and ran it in 2015, while using a typical running style; a heel strike.  Most recreational runners land on their heels, while virtually all Olympic level athletes land on their forefeet.  It is not possible to compete at the highest level with a heel strike because this style of running is less efficient and makes one more prone to injury.  Running with a forefoot strike is a better running style for all runners, not just professional athletes.  I recently converted to a forefoot landing and I can provide extensive insight into how to do this properly.  The following is a very useful slow motion video of the great Haile Gebrselassie showing perfect form. I can also provide advice on nutrition for runners and marathon training plans.

I have an interest in selling things online. Products might include pre-made items such as those found on Alibaba, or anywhere, but I am also particularly interested in inventing new products and I have numerous ideas.  I’m interested in green energy sources including solar and wind.

Advances in DNA sequencing have made it possible for an individual to have their entire genome sequenced.  The effort to sequence the first human genome formally began in 1990, and was declared complete in 2003, at a cost of almost 3 billion dollars.  Today, a full human genome can be sequenced for about $1500, in about one a day.  This means an individual person with questions about their own DNA, whatever they may be, can find answers.  The prices aren’t yet affordable but they are within reach of people who are willing to spend the money to have the work done.  The limiting factor at this point in time is not the actual genome sequencing, but rather the analysis.  Sequencing a genome creates very large data files because the human genome contains billions of DNA bases (A, T, G, or C).  It takes someone who knows what they’re doing to sort through this data and answer questions about it.  I am well suited to do this kind of work.

In my next business venture, I will offer a personalized service to people who have questions about their own DNA.  Many companies provide DNA sequencing services, but most only answer specific pre-set questions, such as: do I have a particular gene variant that makes me susceptible to disease X, or what is my ethnic background.  I will provide a service to people who have questions about their genetics that existing companies do not answer.  For example; a person may wish to have their genome screened for genetic abnormalities that may be responsible for a medical condition that they are experiencing.  Genetic insight can be useful in many ways, including forensics, medicine, ethnicity and paternity, etc.

In addition, just about anything that is (or once was) living can now be identified by its DNA.  Testing might include things like: discovery of the species of bacteria present in soil or water samples, testing of food for microbial contamination, identification of microorganisms or viruses from bodily fluids, identification of animal and plant species, etc.  I will also offer a personalized service to answer questions such as these.  I have written about advances in DNA sequencing and what to expect in the future, in my Life Science Consulting blog.
